Under the Paris Agreement, India has set an ambitious target for clean energy generation through solar power. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has committed to increasing the amount of electric power from clean sources to 40 per cent by 2030. From this, the targeted energy generation from all renewable sources is 175 GW by 2022. As of September 2017, solar power capacity of India is 14.7 GW, accounting for nearly 40 per cent of the energy generation from clean sources. This capacity is estimated to increase to 100 GW by 2022. China is the biggest exporter of solar equipment to India, a trajectory which has been growing since 2012. Specifically in the case of solar cells and modules, India's imports have grown from USD 2.05 million in 2012-13 to USD 4.64 million in 2016-17, showing a growth of 76.25 per cent (Ministry of Commerce). This growth is attributed to the domestic demand for cheaper goods from China and India's need as a market. More here
