Solar Energy only power source to grow YOY in FY18; Capacity additions declined among thermal and wind sources
Renewable energy capacity additions continued their upward momentum in India reaching 20.32% of India's total capacity mix at the end of financial year 2017-18 compared with 17.5% a year ago largely aided by solar capacity additions that saw a jump of 89% year on year. According to Mercom Communications India, a subsidiary of Mercom Capital Group, at the end of FY18, the country's total installed power generation capacity was 345,000 MW with renewables accounting for 70,000 MW or 20.32%. This was a 2.8% share increase over fiscal year 2016-17, which had cumulative renewable energy installations of 57,000 MW, or 17.50% of the total energy mix.
